Most of the time....
I am a journalist. I never intended to be a journalist. I write fiction. But here I am.
I meet the most wonderful people. I recently met Brian, who is part of the Chamber of Commerce for a small town nearby whose city council meetings I cover every month. He wants me to write an article about some fabulously elaborate holiday celebration going on there in December. He invited me (and a fellow reporter from another local paper) to his home (he owns a Bed and Breakfast) for supper and drinks so we could talk to him about the story. I informed him that I am vegan, and he said that would be no problem.
Hot damn!
We went there Tuesday evening. Our Facebook conversation had told us there would be vegan chili, complimentary drinks, and we would also be served a dessert.
He had me at complimentary drinks.
We ate on the back deck, because although it was a bit chilly, it was nice and sunny out. Brian's partner, Bob, joined us, as well as another friend of theirs. Our appetizer was sliced Granny Smith apples dipped in a tofu-based lime dip that was out of this world. The spreaders had fancy little shoes on the ends.
The vegan chili had a lot of veggies in it, and it was delicious. And the Margarita I was served was in a really big glass.
Did I drink the whole thing? You're goddamn right I did. Did you read my last post?
He called me ahead of time about the cornbread. He left out the eggs and it was fine. Dense and perfect.
The dessert? Well, Brian was very excited to find out that Nutter Butters are vegan-friendly. They were scrumptious!
Conversation was lovely. Apparently, I just have to go to Paris someday. Their cocker spaniel was friendly. We laughed and ate and drank. They asked us questions about writing for a newspaper. Lisa and I have different jobs. She works full-time for her paper covering tons of meetings and events all the time. I am just part-time freelance, doing whatever I am told to do. She is better at photography. I am a better writer. The guys were fun and asked me a lot of questions about being a vegan. They were very interested. Brian is now fascinated with vegan cooking and wants us to get together again soon, this time for vegan lasagna.
After the dinner was over, the sun was going down and the air was getting really chilly. Lisa and I both left for the school board meeting in town. I was really full from supper, so the alcohol hadn't affected me a whole lot. I did feel slightly tipsy, though. Just enough to make me giggly and make it hard to control the volume of my voice. Turned out the meeting had an accountant there going over the audit report. That was a little bit hard to pay attention to. But it was worth it.
We did mention the holiday celebration briefly during supper...
