Election night, while I was anxiously watching the coverage on TV, Bob Dylan was rocking the house in Minneapolis. My god, I wish I could have been there. I just read a review and the tears started up all over again. Dylan rarely says anything to his crowd at concerts, he just shyly introduces his band and maybe mumbles a couple other little things, but not much. After he left the stage there was a long wait for the crowd, while the band presumably was discovering that Obama would be the next president. When they came back for the encore, Dylan was happy like a little kid at Christmas, and even talked to the audience about how things were going to change for the better now. He did a rip-roaring rendition of "Blowin' in the Wind," singing his heart out and even dancing around on stage. The crowd began to chant, "Obama! Obama!" People were crying, the audience was ecstatic, drawn together in their love for Dylan and their hope for America.
Big sigh...I am going to listen to Bob all day today. I need something to pick me up.
Dylan has been ending most of his shows with "All Along the Watchtower," for several years now. I myself have seen in three times, and I think it's my favorite song to hear him do live. He has always liked Jimi Hendrix's version better, and his live version is unbelievable. I remember seeing him play outdoors a few years ago, and when he did this song, I closed my eyes, my hand on my heart and felt every bit of the music flowing through me, filling me with life.
The video doesn't do the real thing justice, but here's Bob at the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame show in 1995.
