Tangled Up in Blue

Today I was in St. Paul chaperoning a field trip to see the play "Of Mice and Men." I love being in that area, I feel so alive up there. As we were leaving the Twin Cities area and heading for home, I felt a deep sadness, and at first I didn't know why. Right away I realized that it reminded me of the days when I used to visit John for the weekend, back when I was a teenager. He would drive me home, and it was always a sad trip. For some reason we would always listen to my cassette recording of Dylan's Blood on the Tracks. It's such a sad album. That cassette was my favorite, because John had made it for me off his album, and I could hear all the little scratches. So still to this day, as I am leaving the Twin Cities, I feel sad, and think of these songs.

"Tangled up in Blue" was always one of my absolute favorite Dylan songs. Now it's hard to say it's my favorite, because there are so many other favorites. I have heard it so many thousands of times over the years that it sometimes it doesn't have the impact it used to. But it is truly an amazing, brilliant song, just like every single other song on the album. There are also like 20 different versions of it. Some I like more than others. I have always liked this version, during the Rolling Thunder Revue tour in '75-'76. For some reason, before the show, Dylan covered his face in white makeup. "I saw it in a movie one time," was his explanation.
