The place is pretty full, and I have to sit near this guy that is always at the meetings to complain. He also complained about something I put about him in one of my articles. Awkward...
Writing furiously for a while...then stop. Mind wanders. I see people over and over again come up to the door next to ours and find it locked. They always get that same look on their faces. They look in here and see our meeting. Their confusion is obvious. "No, that can't be it...She said to meet here." I stifle a giggle.
I jump as my cell phone vibrates against my hip. It's Liz. We have been playing phone tag for days. Can't talk now.
Our Representative is talking...I don't like this guy. He brags about himself constantly under the pretense of joking, but I don't laugh. We are discussing the sorry state our budget is in. He rambles on. He says, "Well, the list is long but distinguished." Automatically I think, "Yeah, well so's my johnson." Because when I was 11-12, I watched waaaay too much Top Gun.
It's freezing in this room...it's always freezing. Winter or summer, it doesn't matter. My toes are cold. I should have brought a sweater.
Oh my god, that guy has now said that he was in charge of writing up those plans six times. We are all sooooo impressed!
The council member's cigarettes fall to the floor. A pack of Marlboro Lights. Or was it Camel? He looks around to see if anyone noticed and stuffs them back in his pocket. He's unshaven. He swears. He comes up to me after meetings and asks me not to quote what he said. I like him.
Man, these meetings have started getting long since those two people have been showing up to tell the city how to do things. Can't we get rid of them? Can't we tell them that their ideas suck? Can't we tell them that I want to get home because I am paying a babysitter by the hour? And it's freaking cold in here? Don't they have something better to do?
The attorney had to sit in the back of the room. I wave to him. One time I came to a meeting an hour early because I didn't know they had changed the time. I went to get something to eat, and he was there. We ate together. He told me his son is a vegan. He never wanted his kids to become lawyers, and they didn't. He paid for my Boca burger and fries. I promised to make him sound really intelligent in my articles.
Freeze your face - do NOT roll your eyes, whatever you do. Just look down and write. He is a human being, and he is entitled to say what he thinks.
They better not think about taking away the library. Why do they have to keep scaring us with that? I know the economy is bad, but really only because they keep telling me it is. We still have jobs and money to buy food and pay our bills.
Speaking of jobs, do I really want to give mine up? Have I lost my mind? They're telling me how bad the economy is. Maybe I should hold onto it and feel lucky to have a job at all...I need to talk to Liz.
Come on people, come on!
