The Dylan song "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" may be one of the best songs ever in the history of history (or herstory). Of course, that's just my humble opinion. But there's a line in it that I have always loved.
"And here I sit so patiently waiting to find out what price
You have to pay to get out of going through all these things twice."
Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche believed in the principle of "Eternal Return." Basically, the idea is that the universe has a limited amount of matter, while time is considered infinite. It's kind of a mobius strip, or infinite loop, where eventually time will repeat itself.
The idea that a person will have to repeat their life over and over again is pretty frightening. I mean, everybody has gone through terrible things, done things they are ashamed of, seen things they wish they could forget, and felt pain that they never want to feel again.
I am not a follower of Nietzsche, nor do I know anything more about him than I can learn from Wikipedia. But I find the idea somewhat fascinating.
How would you live your life if you knew you were destined to do it all over again?
Happy Sunday.
