Christmas is almost over. Finally. We have one more get-together tomorrow that had been rescheduled due to illness. I got some nice things. My husband bought me two Bob Dylan T-shirts. He is also giving me some money to go shopping. I got a new coffee pot, and the coffee is so delicious! The thing is so quiet I almost thought it wasn't working! The kids made a haul, as usual, and I can't help thinking about how much I hate all this consumerism and materialism. Drew got mainly toys, and Garrett got things like a skateboard, inline skates and a digital camera. My 15-year-old sister made me a coffee mug with my name on it, filled with chocolate. The boys picked out a new sewing basket for me, and it's purple. Garrett knows me well. All in all, it was good, but everyone has been sick and that has sort of ruined it for me. I worked hard to clean my house while feeling awful, and now it's a disaster again and I don't feel well enough to pick up. I am going to go through their old toys and get rid of more than half of them. They will never notice. Some other kids that need toys can enjoy them.
I also have some mixed feelings going for global warming these days. We have no snow, and the temperatures have been around 40 degrees for weeks. No gloves, hats, boots, and I rarely even zip my coat. I like that A LOT. The difficulties of winter drag me down fast. However, I think maybe that's why there is so much sickness spreading around right now. And, of course, global warming is a BAD THING.
For the New Year, I am going to do my usual. Informally, I am going to declare that this year I will do better at taking care of myself. I will eat better, lose weight, try to get some exercise in. I will also try to be a better mom. I know what I need to do to get these things accomplished, I just need to DO them.
Grace had a blood test the other day to check for celiac disease. I can't get the results until Tuesday because the doctor is out. UGH! Infuriating. I just want to know. I made her another diaper yesterday, a fitted one made with flannel. I used an old towel for two layers of terry in the soaker pad. I made a large this time, because the medium seemed small. This one was a little big, but not too bad. She is growing, slowly gaining weight and filling out. The diaper turned out pretty good, and I'm getting better at it. I can't wait to get some more material to make more. I would like to attempt to make a pocket diaper, but I'm a little scared.

I am ready for the holidays to be over as well. About 7 years ago we were fed up with the consumerism & amterialism of the holidays as well...not to mention the awful spending spree that left us drained on an annual basis. What we decided as a family to do is limit our gifting to the children to 3 each. This is the so-called "logic" we used....The holiday is about the birth of Jesus (and yes, I am still Agnostic and so is Geordyn) and the baby Jesus got one gift each from the 3 wisemen. So, since our children are no better than the "holy" child, they would get no more. One exception has been made...Greer does get one gift from Santa on top of his 3 gifts. Instead, we encourage our children to make gifts with meaning for their friends and relatives (like the mug u got from Mikel), give mini photo albums and choose gifts both practical and fun for the Community Storehouse. They also each get to select an angel from the school angel tree. This has greatly relieved the stress & I believe it helps them realize it isn't all about getting. The best part I am not kicking myself Jan-Mar for all the money I spent!!
I am sorry to hear everyone has been under the weather!!
