The Weekend

Yesterday I found Drew in the laundry room. We have a little tiny laundry room that basically has the washer, dryer, hamper, furnace, and water heater. He was in the hamper. I told him to get out of the hamper. I was afraid it was going to break. It was bulging out on the sides. I asked him why he would want to be in there with all of the dirty stinky clothes.

"This is the only place where I can be alone," was his answer.

I shut the door. Whatever, I thought. I don't know what he meant, because he is pretty much always alone. Right now he is playing Connect Four with his brother, and I am in shock. Usually he is in a room alone watching TV. Sometimes we don't see him for hours. He doesn't get as much attention as the other kids, because he doesn't follow me around demanding it all day long like they do.

He wants to be alone. So I let him be alone.

Jeff's wake and funeral this weekend. I spent time looking at pictures of him when he was a little kid who could walk and run around and do things with his hands and arms. Last night I dreamed I was with him, and we were in a car, and I let him drive. He was speeding, and I warned him he better slow down or we would get in trouble. He drove up a huge hill, and his dad was at the top. He stopped us, and told Jeff to go back down the hill. We coasted down it backwards, and as we descended this long hill, we went back in time. I watched him become younger, marveled at the use of his limbs, his curly hair, the fact that he could walk again.

While cuddling with Grace, she said she had a secret for me. Her little voice whispered in my ear, "I love you. I'm gonna kiss you." She then kissed my cheek.

I interviewed a man who is originally from Canada. He ended almost every sentence with "eh," as in, "True enough, eh?" It turns out he married a lady I interviewed a few years ago from a neighboring town.

Garrett got down all of my Harry Potter books and asked if he could read them. I was like, "Are you kidding me?" I have been trying to get him to read them for a long time now. At the moment we are watching The Chamber of Secrets. This DVD has several bad spots on it. When Garrett was 2-3, he was obsessed with Harry Potter, and we watched this movie several times a day. I still know all the words.

I think I can salvage Chapter 10. I think I can do this. I'm going to go find out.
