I Like My Lips Flaming

My senior year in high school I took Latin, and I loved the class for oh so many reasons. There was this one kid who was a sophomore. I don't remember his name, but I remember he was a photographer for the school newspaper. One day he was sitting on a desk talking to me about his favorite band, The Flaming Lips. Never have I seen someone so enthusiastic about a band. The hand gestures, the determined look on his face..."You have to hear them, they are the most amazing thing ever!" he said, over and over. I asked what kind of music they played, and he couldn't even find the words. "They are like nothing you have ever heard before," was all he said.

He told me to buy some of their music, and if I didn't like it, he would buy it from me. Then he whipped out his wallet. "Guess who's birthday it is today?" he asked. "It's Charles Manson's." In his wallet he carried a picture of Charles Manson with him at all times.

Later I ended up buying Telepathic Surgery on cassette at Broadway Records (pause for a moment of silence for this amazing music outlet that was murdered by large evil corporations) for probably a dollar. I didn't fall in love with them right away. It was years before I revisited them and developed a total respect and awe of them (even if some of their songs sound exactly like Pink Floyd). This is one of my favorite songs of all time.
