Last night I made a trip to the big city north of us and met Todd when he got done with work. We went to a store to look at elliptical machines and purchase one, or at least make a final decision.
Picking out an elliptical requires trying them out to see which one feels right. The boys were all over the place, walking on treadmills, working out on ellipticals, punching the punching bag thingy, playing on the big weight machines and showing off their big muscles. Grace was wearing an old Easter dress that Mikel bought at a garage sale when I found out I was having a girl, along with some dirty white tights and her little pink Crocs that she has been wearing all winter, a pink sweatshirt and a light spring jacket. She pulls her dress way up and says loudly, "I have to go potty!" Everyone can see her dirty tights and the fact that they are not pulled all the way up and her underwear and part of her butt crack are showing.
I usher her to the back of the store where the restrooms are located, trying to get her to lower her dress on the way. I sit her on the toilet and she starts screaming. Somehow, her leg got pinched on the seat, and that was it. No more potty.
On the way back she sees a tiny little bike that she wants that costs $80 (no joke). She gets on it and wants to ride it up to the front of the store to show Daddy. I pick her up and carry her, kicking and screaming at the top of her lungs.
Todd and I kept going back and forth trying out these two ellipticals. Pretty soon Grace had disappeared and she was back by the bikes again. Then Garrett wanted to look at the Heelys, these silly shoes that have a wheel in them that he has wanted for like two years. Grace rode the little bike around while we looked at them.
We see that they are at least $60 and try to convince him that he should get some new rollerblades instead. The boys are pulling boxes of Heelys off the shelves and trying them on, playing with the shoe sizing things. Loud and dramatic whining ensues as we tell them that nobody is getting Heelys tonight.
We rush to one more store to look at an elliptical before it closes. On the way, we notice that the moon is huge and full, a golden color, with clouds around it. My cell phone rings, and it is Todd, who is driving his own car behind me. He tells me to turn the radio station and I hear a U2 song, "All I Want is You," which I guess is kind of our song, and it was really sweet to hear it on the radio.
Eventually it is 9 p.m. and nobody has had any supper and everyone is about to drop dead of starvation. Forgoing to usual McDonalds, Todd suggests Perkins. I find out that Perkins is an absolute vegan nightmare. After bugging the waitress about ingredients and how things are cooked, I settle on a dry English muffin with jelly, a cup of fresh fruit, and french fries. Garrett orders nothing. Drew orders a small cheese pizza off the kid's menu, which he does not even touch. Grace has to go potty, but when I take her, she sees the toilet and bursts into tears.
While she is whining at the table that she is tired and wants to go home, an old man comes over to our table and shows all of the kids a coin trick, which they adore. Each kid ends up with a new gold dollar coin. They try to imitate the coin tricks and play with them until Drew starts crying because he dropped his between the booth and the wall. So I get under the table and crawl back there and rescue it for him.
All the way home Garrett did not stop talking to me for even a minute.
I'm so out of of shape that my legs are a little sore today just from trying out the ellipticals.
Todd will pick up the machine tonight and then I have no excuse for not exercising. The biggest loser contest has another month left. I am hoping that I can lose more than the four measly pounds I have lost so far.
Grace managed to hold her pee until we got home.
She's wearing that dress again today, and I don't care. It just doesn't get any cuter.
