Just Awesome

Sometimes my kids just blow me away with their intelligence, humor, affection, the amazing things they say. It seems they will never stop surprising me and supplying me with free entertainment. The other day Grace was laying next to me and had her hand under her shirt. She said, "Mom, these are my humps."

My first thought was, "Has she been listening to the Black Eyed Peas?" But no, she was referring to her ribs. I told her they were her ribs, and that they were bones.

"I call them humps," she replied. "I can't say bones."

Garrett is writing a report on chinchillas just because he wants to. I find this beyond awesome.

The first grade has a circus every year, and Drew gets to be the magician. For some reason he was just jumping-up-and-down-in-his-seat dying to be the magician. It could bebecause Garrett was a magician two years ago. He doesn't say much about school, but he has been talking about this circus non-stop and about the trick he gets to do. He asked me if I was going to be there. What could I say? I told him I would. I'm leaving work early that day. They'll live without me.

If it wasn't for the kids at work, I would despise my job. They are also a constant source of warm fuzzies for me. One of my students and I decided to have Fresh Fruit Friday every week. Everyone can bring in some fresh fruit to share with others and we can just sit around during the end of the day study hall and eat delicious, sweet fruit. Today I brought three kiwi, and he brought some bananas, but Fresh Fruit Friday didn't really happen. At the end of the day we had an Ag Olympics for Ag week, and instead of feasting on nature's candy, we all had to watch people throw hay bales, do a three-legged race, and throw eggs at each other. Yuck.

We also neglected to tell others about Fresh Fruit Friday. We should probably work on our planning skills.

There is another student, and I have called him my musical soul mate. He loves the Beatles, and even has some Dylan on his iPod. I told him that I was listening to Eels the other day and he said, "Oh, those guys are great!" I guarantee you he is the only other person in that building that has even heard of the Eels. We talk about music all the time. He's a quiet, shy kid that you barely know is there because he is actually doing his work and keeping out of trouble. We were talking yesterday and I told him we might be getting a couple of new special ed. kids in the room.

"Maybe I'll have someone to talk to," he said. "Someone who gets it."

And you know what? I knew exactly what he meant.

Project Get Through the Winter is up and running and holding steady. I'm going to go write, then make supper and some cupcakes for Garrett's birthday (which was yesterday). If my S'mores cupcakes are incredible (and maybe even if they're not), I will tell you all about them.

Mmm, S'mores cupcakes, that sounds interesting.

And reading this part --

-- reminded me of something I did when I was about 9 or 10 or 11 years old. We had this old set of encyclopedias, so I once sat down with each of them and tried to pick out at least one thing from each letter of the alphabet to write about (summarize) based on its encyclopedia entry. I had other writings that I did too, but whatever it all was filled nearly two composition books before I got bored with it and laid that project aside.
