For about the last four weeks or so (I can't really remember) I have gone from mostly-vegan to pretty much total vegan. No dairy, no eggs. But I still have some honey. I decided to see how long I could go without dairy or eggs. It has been easier than I thought. I have been really good at staying away from non-vegan chocolate candy, baked goods and other foods. I have even said no without a care to a giant coffee and fudge flavored ice cream in a freshly made waffle cone. And it didn't bother me. However, I have discovered that there is a SHITLOAD of vegan junk food out there. I mean, Oreos are vegan! And I can go through a giant bag of Twizzlers in no time, and I have a bag of dairy-free chocolate chips in the cupboard that I dig into every so often. So it's more than just deciding that I don't want to consume any animal products for health, ethical and environmental reasons. I have to think about the crap that is going into my body and remember what it feels like to eat healthy food. As I slowly get away from eating sugary, fatty food, I lose the cravings for it, and when I do break down and eat junk, it makes me feel nauseas, lethargic, and gross. After I ate all those Twizzlers I crashed on the couch and couldn't do anything for like an hour.
Eating out can be difficult, but we don't do much of that unless we are out and about for the day and need to eat somewhere. I have managed to avoid starvation by getting my own food at a local health food store or else making special orders. Saturday night I ordered a personal pizza for myself when we got PizzaHut and I ordered it with pineapple, mushrooms and no cheese. Very yummy (but not very healthy). When I went out to eat with a friend last week I made a special request...the restaurant has a portabello burger, and I ordered it without the pesto and cheese, and instead asked if I could get the grilled onions and guacamole on it. I guess the chef wasn't very happy, but he did it and it was so delicious! And I will bring some of my own food to family get-togethers and maybe expose others to some new and delicious vegan food.
I found this just today and had to share it. Having a good laugh every day is very important, in my opinion.
