Sewing Once More

Yesterday I got out my sewing machine, wiped off the dust, and attempted to make a diaper for Grace. For several months now I have had the material to do so, and have not had the opportunity, or ambition, to do any sewing. But now that I am no longer writing regularly, and we have been pretty much stuck inside due to the extreme cold and snow, I went back to it. After all, Grace is two now, and could be potty-learned soon. Better let her wear some pretty brand new diapers.

I cut out the material and pieced it together, then stared at it for like five whole minutes. What the hell comes next? Do I put the velcro on now or later? Elastic? When do I do that? And how on earth can I cut two pieces of material out of the same pattern and have them NEVER match up? I couldn't draw a straight line if my life depended on it, and the same goes for cutting and sewing, I guess. I only halfway know what the hell I'm doing, and it gets so frustrating. The machine locks up, the bobbin runs out, the thread doesn't go through, etc. etc. And every time I start something, Grace is poopy or into some paint somewhere or trying to play with my pins and scissors. It wasn't exactly relaxing. What came out wasn't beautiful, and wasn't perfect by any means, but it will work. So today I decided to make another attempt. Aside from problems with the old machine, it went much better today. Here is Grace wearing the diaper as soon as I finished it. I have two more to go this same color. It's a pocket diaper, my favorite kind due to the easy washing and drying and lack of odor issues that other diapers can have. It's made with a layer of waterproof PUL on the outside and a layer of soft polar fleece on the inside, which keeps the wetness away from her skin. I stuff the inside through a pocket in the back with two microfiber towels folded in thirds. Very absorbent, and cheap. I love cloth diapers... :)
